The matric class of 2023 achieved great success, with learners with special educational needs obtaining 2,072 distinctions out of 5,458 enrolled for the matric examinations. However, only 5,288 learners eventually sat for exams, with a total of 4,581 passing. Minister Motshekga acknowledged the achievements of learners with special needs, stating that 2,491 achieved Bachelor passes, 1,360 achieved Diploma passes, and 591 achieved Higher Education passes. These learners managed to achieve a total of 2,072 distinctions, demonstrating their dedication and hard work.
Motshekga emphasized the importance of identifying and assisting learners with special needs, stating that their department has consistently put measures in place to ensure that more than 90% of 7-15-year-old children with disabilities now attend school. She also highlighted the government’s commitment to providing learners with special needs access to quality basic education programs, emphasizing the principles of equity, inclusivity, and redress.
The Minister stressed the importance of an Inclusive Education System, stating that it makes a significant contribution towards an inclusive economy and society. She also mentioned that learners with special educational needs have been included in tracking learner performance in the NSC examinations for the past few years.
In addition to the success of learners with special needs, the matric class of 2023 achieved a total of 253,807 distinctions. The main contributors towards passes with distinctions were KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, and Limpopo.
Minister Motshekga’s comments to Africa Links 24 after the results announcement highlighted the government’s commitment to providing support and resources to learners with special needs, as well as recognizing the achievements of all learners in the matric class of 2023.
