Traces of blood were still visible at the location where disgraced former Steinhoff CEO Markus Jooste tragically ended his own life, as reported by the Daily Maverick when they visited the scene on the morning of Friday, 22 March. The incident took place at Kwaaiwater beach in Hermanus, a short distance from the Jooste compound. On the way to the site, blood droplets were also found along the path leading to where his body was discovered and subsequently transported by authorities to the hospital for medical attention.
Upon speaking to residents in the area, conflicting sentiments emerged regarding Jooste’s death. One resident expressed sadness over any loss of life but questioned how Jooste could live with himself after his actions. The resident highlighted a prevailing sense of resentment towards Jooste in the community, citing numerous unanswered questions surrounding his downfall. Another resident anonymously shared that despite the Jooste family maintaining a low profile, Markus Jooste was known for his arrogance, which lingered even after his passing. However, the resident acknowledged the difficult circumstances faced by Jooste and his family.
The news of Jooste’s suicide came shortly after he was informed of an administrative penalty of R475 million imposed by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) to be paid by a set deadline. Police reports indicated that Jooste allegedly shot himself around 2:40 pm, sustaining a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Despite maintaining his innocence in recent interactions with the FSCA, Jooste’s response to inquiries left much to be desired.
Following Jooste’s death, activity at the Jooste compound was subdued, with Michael Jooste, Markus Jooste’s son, seen pacing within the premises. Neighbors reported seeing ambulances in the vicinity but noted a lack of public displays of mourning or tribute. The Land Party, originating from land access and housing protests in 2018, had organized a planned protest. The protest was intended as a call for accountability from Jooste regarding pension funds and worker’s rights. However, following Jooste’s passing, the protestors decided to proceed with their demonstration without making a stop at the former CEO’s residence.
Kholiswa Ngqandana, a Land Party member and PR councillor, expressed that while Jooste was affluent, he failed to contribute to the impoverished community. Ngqandana highlighted the neglect of underprivileged areas in Hermanus and the lack of essential services for its residents. The Jooste family has chosen to remain silent, offering no public statements or comments regarding the tragic events unfolding.
