South Africa: Health MEC faces inquiry after xenophobic statements

The Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) is set to conduct a misconduct inquiry against Limpopo MEC for Health Dr Phophi Ramathuba for making xenophobic remarks to a Zimbabwean patient in August 2022. The inquiry will take place on Monday, 25 March, at 10 am. Nigel Branken from Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia (Kaax) will testify at the inquiry, following a complaint lodged by various organizations including Lawyers for Human Rights, Neighbours NPO, Treatment Action Campaign, and others. Kaax is calling on the government and the public to address the root causes of poor service delivery in Limpopo and South Africa. The inquiry will be held at the Sheraton Hotel in Pretoria.

Moving on to other events, the Nelson Mandela Foundation will host a seminar on the impact of climate change on food security on Wednesday, 27 March, and Thursday, 28 March, at Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape. The aim of the seminar is to bring together stakeholders to find solutions to the immediate and long-term threats posed by climate change. Registration for the seminar can be done on the Nelson Mandela Foundation website.

On Wednesday, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group will host an “Ask The Expert” session at 1 pm, focusing on empowering individuals with bipolar disorder to manage their moods effectively using the Bipolar Mood Diary. This session can be streamed on Sadag’s Facebook page. Additionally, at 4:30 pm on Wednesday, HealthCare Workers for Palestine South Africa will host a seminar on medical ethics and human rights violations in occupied Palestine at the University of the Witwatersrand SPH Resource Centre, Wits School of Public Health, and online.

Thursday, 28 March, will see the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation hosting a morning of reflection to mark the seventh anniversary of Kathrada’s passing. This event aims to bring together political parties, faith leaders, business representatives, and civil society to pay tribute to Kathrada and re-commit to free and fair elections in 2024. The event will take place at Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg.

Saturday, 30 March, is the International Day of Zero Waste, promoting sustainable consumption and production patterns. The event seeks to address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution by fostering sound waste management practices and promoting waste prevention. Zero-waste initiatives are crucial in protecting the environment, enhancing food security, and improving human health and well-being.

On the same day, at 11 am, The Health Justice Initiative, Muslim Youth Movement, and Palestine Solidarity Campaign will host a conversation with Dr Muhannad Ayyash on the path towards Palestinian Liberation. The conversation will take place at the Bo-Kaap Cultural Hub and online. This event aims to shed light on settler colonialism, decolonization, and the Palestinian liberation movement.
