ANC senior member and International Relations minister Naledi Pandor has assured that the government would fervently continue to back Palestine through its legal action in the International Court of Justice. Pandor made these remarks during a panel discussion at the Baitun Noor Centre in Lenasia. She emphasized the importance of the ANC securing a majority in the upcoming elections so that the South African government can continue to pursue the case.

Pandor emphasized the ANC’s commitment to pursuing the case, even if the government is not able to. She urged the people of South Africa to vote for the ANC to ensure that the case continues. The panel discussion was hosted by the ANC Gauteng and included speakers such as Panyaza Lesufi, Dada Morero, and Nazeem Adam from the Palestinian Solidarity Alliance (PSA).

The ongoing case between South Africa and Israel in the International Court of Justice has seen some progress, with the court granting some of the measures requested by South Africa to prevent genocide in Gaza and Palestine. However, there are still crucial issues that need to be addressed, such as ordering a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict.

South Africa made urgent requests to the ICJ for additional measures to prevent harm to civilians during Israel’s assault on Gaza. The court declined these requests but reiterated that Israel must adhere to the previous orders. Another appeal was made by South Africa to the court for additional provisional measures to prevent a full-scale famine in Gaza.

Pandor also addressed the issue of corruption within the ANC, refuting the belief that all members are corrupt. She acknowledged the challenges faced in undoing the legacy of apartheid and stressed the importance of recognizing the progress made while also addressing the imperfections.

Pandor was supported by Lesufi, who reassured residents that the ANC-led government remains committed to addressing domestic issues such as rolling blackouts and crime while also supporting the people of Palestine. Adam, from the PSA, warned residents against voting for political parties that support Zionism unconditionally, singling out the DA, Patriotic Alliance (PA), and African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP).

Adam praised the government’s efforts in the ICJ case, stating that it has brought hope to solidarity organizations and challenged racism. He highlighted the importance of challenging racist value systems and promoting freedom for all, drawing on Nelson Mandela’s statement that “we cannot be free until Palestine is free.”

Overall, the discussions at the Baitun Noor Centre shed light on the government’s commitment to supporting Palestine in the ICJ case while also addressing domestic issues and combating corruption. The panelists emphasized the importance of voting consciously and supporting parties that align with the values of freedom and solidarity.
