ANC transformation committee chair Zweli Mkhize has made a commitment to address inflation in order to alleviate the burden on South Africans. Speaking to journalists at the party’s Luthuli House headquarters, Mkhize outlined the ANC’s manifesto priority three plan, which focuses on tackling the high cost of living.

Recent surveys have indicated that the ruling party may see a decline in voter support in the upcoming elections. In response to this, President Ramaphosa announced a six-point plan during the ANC manifesto launch in Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban. These priorities include a jobs plan, re-industrialisation, reducing the cost of living, increasing access to education and healthcare, and improving energy, rail, and logistics infrastructure.

Mkhize emphasized the party’s commitment to addressing essential needs such as food, housing, healthcare, energy, transport, and wages. He highlighted the prevalence of poverty in South Africa, with over 55.5% of the population living below the national upper poverty line and 25% experiencing food poverty. The high cost of living impacts individuals across various socio-economic backgrounds, including those living in informal settlements, townships, affluent suburbs, and rural areas.

The ANC’s overarching goal remains the elimination of poverty, unemployment, and inequality, which are rooted in the historical legacies of colonialism and apartheid. Mkhize outlined measures to lift the social wage for all South Africans, particularly those living in poverty, unemployed, or in underserved areas. These efforts have already shown progress, with poverty rates decreasing from 71.1% in 1993 to under 56% in 2020.

President Ramaphosa previously introduced the character of Tintswalo, symbolizing those who have benefited from ANC policies since 1994. These gains include access to free RDP houses, electricity, clean water, education, and employment opportunities. Mkhize reiterated the ANC’s commitment to creating a better life for all and emphasized the importance of addressing economic hardships to pave the way for a more sustainable and inclusive future.

Priority three of the ANC’s manifesto reflects the party’s determination to uplift vulnerable communities and promote economic stability. By focusing on the needs of the average South African, the ANC aims to build a more equitable society for all. Mkhize’s remarks underscore the party’s dedication to tackling the pressing challenges faced by the country’s population and working towards long-term solutions.
