At least nine ANC supporters tragically lost their lives and several others sustained critical injuries after a bus they were riding in crashed on the R33 near Dumbe, Paulpietersburg, in northern KwaZulu-Natal during the early hours of Sunday morning. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport confirmed that the accident took place around 5am, as the bus was returning from the ANC’s election manifesto launch at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday.
Law enforcement teams at the scene reported nine fatalities, with the full recovery of the bus still ongoing. Additionally, scores of other passengers were injured, with four in critical condition, and all have been transported to a local hospital for treatment. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation, with experts being deployed to assist in the forensic examination.
KZN MEC for transport, community safety, and liaison Sipho Hlomuka expressed his deepest condolences to the families of those affected. He emphasized the importance of the ongoing investigation, looking into factors such as road conditions, the bus’s state, weather conditions, and the driver’s condition at the time of the accident.
The ANC, along with national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, expressed shock at the tragic event. The KZN health MEC and deputy chairperson of the ANC in the province, Nomagugu Simelane, were en route to the accident site and hospitals to assess the situation, provide support to the injured, and meet with affected families.
