Somalia has today officially been declared the latest member of the East African Community (EAC), after reaching the final steps of joining the organization.
Somalia joins the countries of Kenya, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania as members of the organization.
The decision comes after a meeting held last Monday resulted in the 23rd summit of EAC heads of state. Somalia’s inclusion in the EAC Community is seen as a step towards peaceful coexistence, as highlighted in the 22nd extraordinary summit.
This decision will significantly impact on strengthening cooperation, promoting trade, and accelerating the implementation of Somalia’s transformation plan.
