Somalia’s foreign ministry has issued a statement calling on Ethiopia to retract its recent deal with Somaliland, stating that there is “no space for mediation” unless Ethiopia reverses its agreement and acknowledges the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia. The deal, signed on January 1, has caused considerable backlash from Somalia, as it considers Somaliland to be part of its territory and views the agreement as a violation of its sovereignty.
In response to the situation, the African Union’s Peace and Security Council has urged for restraint and emphasized the importance of respecting Somalia’s sovereignty. The Council has also expressed concern over the potential broader impact of escalating tensions in the region. Meanwhile, members of the East African regional bloc, IGAD, are convening in Uganda to discuss the dispute.
Somalia’s foreign ministry is taking a firm stance against the deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland, insisting on the retraction of the agreement and the reaffirmation of Somalia’s territorial integrity. The ongoing dispute has garnered attention from regional and international bodies, reflecting the significance of the issue and the potential implications for stability in the area.
With tensions running high and opposing perspectives on the status of Somaliland, the situation remains complex and sensitive. The involvement of entities such as the African Union and IGAD demonstrates the broader regional concern over the dispute. As discussions and negotiations continue, the hope is for a peaceful resolution that respects the interests and sovereignty of all involved parties.
