The Somali government has recently confirmed the successful killing of over 50 Al-Shabaab extremist militants in a military operation in the lower Juba region. Deputy Information Minister Abdirahman Yusuf Al Adala provided this information to the Somali news agency, SONNA. Additionally, 20 members of Al-Shabaab were captured alive during this operation in various areas such as Muse-Haji, Malaylay, Turdho, and Baxar-saafka.
The military operations have been ongoing since Saturday in the lower Juba region, targeting villages and areas where Al-Shabaab members and leaders were located. The joint forces of the Somali National Army and Jubaland State forces have been actively pursuing the militants in the forests of the region.
The Somali government has intensified its offensive operations against Al-Shabaab in recent months, gaining significant ground in its enduring fight against the extremist group, particularly in central Somalia. A total war has been declared by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on the Al-Shabaab extremists who have long been a menace to the country.
In a recent incident, 30 Al-Shabaab militants were killed in the Jamaame area in lower Juba along the river, with 10 others captured for their involvement in public disruptions in the Bar Sanguuni area. The African Union force is planning to withdraw from Somalia by the end of 2024, handing over security responsibilities to the Somali government.
To bolster the capabilities of the Somali army, the United States and Somalia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the construction of up to five military bases for the Danab Brigade. Additionally, high-level discussions were held between Somali Interior Minister Ahmed Macalin Fiqi and a delegation from India, focusing on cooperation between the two countries and the progress made by the Somali government in security and development projects.
The surge in deadly attacks by Al-Shabaab against military and civilian targets in Somalia has heightened concerns, prompting the government to take decisive action to counter the threat. The continued efforts to eradicate Al-Shabaab and enhance security in the region remain a top priority for the Somali government.
