On March 24, 2024, Minni Arko Minawi, the leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), made a significant announcement in Atbara, White Nile State. He declared that the SLM would actively engage in the fight against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), citing the RSF’s violations of Sudanese sovereignty and serious human rights abuses as the primary reasons for their involvement.

Minawi made his statement while appearing in a convoy of military vehicles departing from Atbara, Nile River State, on the way to Khartoum. He expressed that the SLM’s goal was to help rebuild citizens’ lives and take back the country from those who had caused terror with acts of sexual violence.

The leader emphasized that Sudan was currently facing a critical crisis, condemning the RSF’s attacks on state sovereignty and citizens’ dignity in regions like Darfur, Gezira, and Khartoum. These attacks included heinous acts such as the rape of women, desecration of religious sites, land seizure, property confiscation, and occupation of homes and institutions in Khartoum. Additionally, the RSF had disrupted humanitarian aid deliveries by attacking safe passage routes crucial for aid distribution.

Minawi expressed frustration at the lack of progress towards a peaceful resolution to the crisis over the past ten months. He called on the Sudanese citizens to resist the RSF’s actions, which he deemed as a violation of Sudanese sovereignty by “foreigners” invading their homes. Minawi pledged to work alongside his comrades in the joint force to put an end to these violations and protect the nation’s integrity.

This recent declaration followed a similar stance taken on November 16, 2023, when Minawi, alongside Jibril Ibrahim and Mustafa Tambour, leader of another SLM faction, decided to join forces with the Sudanese army against the RSF, abandoning their previous position of neutrality.

In conclusion, Minni Arko Minawi’s announcement highlights the SLM’s commitment to combating the RSF’s aggression and upholding the rights and dignity of the Sudanese people. Their decision to engage in the fight against the RSF reflects a determination to defend Sudanese sovereignty and protect citizens from further abuse and violence. The collaboration between the SLM and the joint forces signifies a unified effort to bring stability and justice to a country plagued by conflict and turmoil.
