The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) is working diligently to address security concerns in the country. Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, recently issued a warning that SIM cards not linked to National Identity Numbers (NIN) will be deactivated by the end of February. Additionally, the NCC is collaborating with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and relevant security agencies to combat telecommunication-linked crimes. However, Dr. Maida emphasized that while progress has been made, the situation still requires ongoing attention.

In an effort to expand internet access across the country, the NCC is considering the deployment of satellite broadband. The goal is to achieve a 70% broadband penetration rate by 2025. Dr. Maida revealed these plans during an introductory meeting with the media in Abuja. He also discussed the NCC’s efforts to address the issue of illegal Subscriber Identity Mode (SIM) cards in the country. Sanctions will be imposed against those found to have engaged in this activity. Dr. Maida emphasized that SIM cards not linked to NIN will no longer work by the end of February. He attributed the prevalence of pre-registered or illegally registered SIM cards to exploitation of a loophole in the policy to link NIN with SIM cards.

The EVC also addressed concerns about network tariffs and other irregularities on the part of licensed network providers. He assured consumers that the NCC’s primary allegiance is to Nigerians and that efforts are being made to protect consumer interests. Dr. Maida emphasized the need to ensure that consumers are satisfied, while also acknowledging the importance of attracting investment in the industry. He stressed the importance of striking a balance between consumer satisfaction and the financial interests of network operators.

During the meeting with ICT reporters, the EVC revealed that Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have committed to simplifying their tariffs to provide transparency to consumers. The NCC is considering implementing regulations to formalize the simplicity of MNO tariffs. Dr. Maida reiterated the NCC’s commitment to prioritizing consumer satisfaction, while also acknowledging the need to protect the interests of licensed operators.

In conclusion, the NCC is actively addressing security concerns related to SIM cards and telecommunication-linked crimes. The commission is also focused on expanding internet access across the country and ensuring transparency in network tariffs. Dr. Maida emphasized the NCC’s commitment to protecting consumer interests, while also considering the financial viability of the industry. As the NCC continues to collaborate with relevant stakeholders, it remains dedicated to addressing these critical issues while ensuring a positive experience for consumers.
