The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, has departed for Côte d’Ivoire to attend the semi-final match of the 2023 African Cup of Nations between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and South Africa.
This information was conveyed in a statement released by Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to The President on Media & Communications. The statement outlined that Senator Kashim Shettima, acting on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has left Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, to show his support for the Super Eagles as they compete against South Africa in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The highly anticipated match is scheduled to take place at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake, Côte d’Ivoire, today at 6 p.m. Nkwocha further expressed that Senator Kashim Shettima’s visit to Côte d’Ivoire aims to strengthen the deep connection between football and national identity in Nigeria. He emphasized that Shettima’s presence is intended to not only motivate the Super Eagles on the field but also serve as a source of encouragement for the millions of Nigerians who are cheering for the team from their homes.
The 2023 AFCON has witnessed a remarkable performance by the Super Eagles, defying the initial predictions that they would not progress far in the tournament, which commenced on January 13, 2024. Their impressive display in the group stages and a thrilling victory in the quarter-final have solidified their status as formidable contenders for the title, which would mark their fourth championship win.
As this marks their 15th appearance in the semi-finals, Nigeria holds the record for the most appearances at this stage in the history of the tournament. The Super Eagles are determined to replicate their success from 2013 when they secured the championship in South Africa under the leadership of the late coach Stephen Keshi.
Nkwocha underscored that Vice President Shettima’s visit to Côte d’Ivoire symbolizes a powerful call for national unity and support. He encouraged Nigerians worldwide to raise their voices and rally behind the Super Eagles as they prepare for their crucial semi-final match. The Special Adviser to Tinubu on Media and Communications also affirmed that the entire nation stands in solidarity with the Super Eagles as they strive to secure a spot in the final of the 2023 AFCON.
