The recent political happenings in Kano State have sparked controversy and wide-ranging comments from different political personalities. The issue began with an invitation extended by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, to Governor Abba Yusuf and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to join the APC. Former governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, opposed this move and described it as unnecessary. Shekarau, who served as governor of the state for two terms and was also a former minister of education, expressed his disapproval in a video message.
The former governor’s opinion was that Ganduje’s invitation to Yusuf and other NNPP members to join the APC was unnecessary. He believed that instead of making such a move, Ganduje should have focused on calling for peace and unity among the people of Kano, especially after the conclusion of the Supreme Court judgment on the Kano governorship election.
Shekarau urged the people of Kano to maintain a peaceful coexistence regardless of who is leading, pointing out that the case had been concluded and that eight years in power was a fleeting moment. He stressed the need for leadership to be based on justice and association, and suggested that if the people don’t feel justice is being served, they should seek for other options.
On the other hand, the APC National Chairman’s Public Enlightenment Unit expressed great concern over the comments credited to Buba Galadima, a chieftain of NNPP. He accused Ganduje of harboring hatred for the people of Kano. Senior Special Assistant on Public Enlightenment to the APC National Chairman, Oliver Okpala, criticized Galadima’s comments. He accused Galadima of trying to twist the narrative and misinterpret Ganduje’s stance in Kano politics. Okpala also stated that Galadima has a history of controversial statements and called on him to preach peace, love, and unity like other statesmen.
The recent developments in Kano State reflect the political tension and differences in opinions among the various political parties and personalities. The invitation extended by Ganduje has sparked reactions and concerns from different quarters, with prominent figures like Shekarau and Galadima expressing opposing views on the matter. The fallout from this development remains to be seen as it continues to generate commentaries and reactions within the political space.
