The Institute for Early Childhood Development (IECD) along with Unesco’s Category 2 Institute has announced the opening of registrations for the 13th Cohort of the Pre-Registration, Sensitisation, and Training Programme (PRESET) for individuals interested in becoming childminders. This program is essential for those looking to pursue a career in childminding, especially in light of the IECD’s efforts to crack down on unregistered childcare providers.

Since its inception in 2016, the PRESET program has aimed to educate and inform prospective childminders about the 10 National Standards for home-based childcare services. These standards cover various aspects such as health, safety, child rights, staffing, early learning, nutrition, and administration, among others. Understanding and adhering to these standards is crucial for individuals seeking to register their services with the IECD, as mandated by the National Standards on Childminding Regulations of 2016.

Unlike previous years, the 13th Cohort of the PRESET program will offer only one training session. This decision was made based on the number of enrolments received, with approximately 40 participants expected to attend. This diverse group will include practicing unregistered childminders, childminder assistants, and individuals who have previously completed the PRESET program and are in need of a refresher course.

The program is scheduled to take place over nine Saturdays from April 27 to July 7, 2024, with a break on June 1. Additional details regarding the venue and logistics will be provided during the introductory meeting on March 9, 2024. The hands-on and practical approach of the training sessions aims to equip childminders with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively implement the National Standards in their childcare services.

Director for Home-Based Child Care Service, Natalie Moustache, emphasized the importance of the training program in light of the forthcoming Early Childhood Development (ECD) Act of 2022. This legislation makes it illegal to operate a childcare service without proper registration with the IECD, carrying potential penalties including imprisonment and fines. Mrs. Moustache underlined the seriousness of the training and the significance of complying with the regulations to avoid legal consequences.

Interested individuals have until March 9, 2024, to register for the 13th Cohort of the PRESET program. Those looking to enroll are encouraged to contact the IECD for further information and registration details. The Institute aims to empower prospective childminders with the knowledge and skills needed to provide high-quality childcare services in alignment with the National Standards and regulatory requirements.
