A group of Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) teachers from Seychelles are gearing up for a two-month training program in China. The third cohort of teachers, hailing from various secondary schools and a professional center in Seychelles, received their flight tickets last Friday to attend the training at the Jiangsu Vocational Institute of Architectural Technology and the Zibo Vocational Institute.

The training, scheduled to take place from March 6 to May 9, 2024, will focus on specialized areas such as Ornamental Horticulture, Performing Arts, Sustainable Development, and Renewable Energy. This initiative is a result of a joint effort between the Ministry of Education in Seychelles and the Government of China, under a memorandum of understanding signed in December 2022.

The primary objective of this training program is to enhance the teaching skills of Seychelles’ vocational education teachers, provide them with new experiences, foster cultural and educational exchanges between China and Seychelles, and further strengthen the bond between the two nations. Additionally, the teachers will also receive practical training and internships in various industries to enhance their expertise.

During a ceremony to distribute the flight tickets, Lin Nan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of China to Seychelles, highlighted the importance of technical talents in driving the country’s progress and development. She emphasized that vocational and technical training not only produces skilled workers but also creates employment opportunities. Ambassador Lin Nan also mentioned the successful collaboration between China and Seychelles in the field of vocational and technical education, including the training of two previous cohorts of teachers in China.

Minister for Education, Dr Justin Valentin, commended the efforts of the education ministry and the China-Africa Vocational Alliance in providing high-quality training to TVET teachers. He noted that the trained teachers showed great enthusiasm and motivation for improving the TVET program in Seychelles, and also appreciated the cultural richness and diversity of China.

Looking ahead, Minister Valentin revealed plans for further capacity building through the alliance, with 12 more TVET teachers set to undergo training in China this year. The upcoming fourth cohort of teachers will receive training in areas such as graphic design, textile and fashion, and electricity and electronics, all essential for the growth of TVET in Seychelles.

The selected training institutes in China, the Jiangsu Vocational Institute of Architectural Technology and the Zibo Vocational Institute, are known for their expertise in horticulture, sustainable development, renewable energy, and performing arts, respectively.

Overall, this collaboration between Seychelles and China signifies a deepening partnership in vocational and technical education, aiming to equip teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge to enhance the TVET sector in Seychelles. Through these initiatives, both nations continue to strengthen ties and promote mutual learning and development.
