The British High Commission (BHC) recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Chevening programme with a reception held at the residence of the British High Commissioner to Seychelles, Jeffrey Glekin. The event highlighted the achievements of Chevening recipients and showcased the benefits of studying in the United Kingdom (UK).

Approximately 30 Seychellois Chevening scholars attended the reception, along with the Minister for Education, Dr. Justin Valentin. Chevening scholarships are part of the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and partner organizations. These scholarships support one-year taught master’s degrees at UK universities for individuals with the potential to become future leaders, decision-makers, and opinion formers.

Since its establishment in 1983, the Chevening programme has sponsored over 55,000 scholars globally from 200 countries, including more than 80 Seychellois scholars. High Commissioner Glekin highlighted the importance of sharing knowledge and culture by investing in talented individuals around the world. He emphasized the role of Chevening scholars in driving positive social, economic, environmental, scientific, and cultural change in their home countries.

A quarter of world leaders, including those in Seychelles, have studied in the UK, demonstrating the program’s impact on global leadership. The British High Commission expressed its pride in the achievements of Seychellois Chevening scholars and encouraged more individuals to apply for the scholarship. The creation of a Chevening alumni association was proposed to further strengthen relationships between Seychelles and the UK.

The alumni association would provide a platform for past Chevening scholars to mentor and support future scholars, fostering a more engaged and impactful network of international scholarship alumni. The Chevening Alumni Programme Fund offers support for activities across the UK’s diplomatic network, contributing to the growth and success of Chevening scholars.

Rebecca Julienne, an alumni member who initiated the alumni association, emphasized the importance of sharing experiences and information among past and future Chevening scholars. Peter Sinon, another past Chevening scholar, praised the alumni initiative for facilitating connections between current and returning scholars.

The event concluded with Minister Valentin and High Commissioner Glekin cutting a commemorative cake to mark the occasion. Overall, the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Chevening programme highlighted the remarkable achievements of Seychellois scholars and the positive impact of studying in the UK. Through the establishment of a Chevening alumni association, the program aims to continue supporting and inspiring future scholars in Seychelles and beyond.
