A tragic road crash occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, resulting in the loss of 17 lives and leaving more than 27 people seriously injured. The incident took place at Othoo area in Nyando, Kisumu County, at around 2:30 am. Nyando sub-County Police Commander Grace Thuo confirmed the accident, stating that the injured passengers were rushed to Ahero sub-County Hospital, where 12 bodies were also taken.
The exact number of passengers on the bus at the time of the accident is still pending confirmation. Eyewitnesses reported that the Super Metro bus, en route to Mombasa, was attempting to overtake a saloon car when it collided with an oncoming lorry. Tragically, both the bus and the lorry drivers lost their lives in the collision.
Residents near the scene of the accident described a devastating sight, with bodies strewn across the road and the lorry severely damaged. Despite rescue efforts by the community and local law enforcement, the impact of the crash left the lorry split into pieces, scattering debris across the area.
Ibrahim Wanyande, a Kisumu County health assistant administrator, reported that 12 passengers with minor injuries have been treated and discharged, while 15 individuals are being observed at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, two of whom are in critical condition.
The tragic incident has deeply affected the local community, prompting an outpouring of support for the victims and their families. Efforts to investigate the cause of the accident are underway as authorities work to bring clarity to this devastating event.
