In March 2023, Yarga Sy, an employee of an airport security company, was arrested in Dakar by the Attorney General of the Court of Appeal, Ibrahima Bakhoum. He was accused of involuntary manslaughter, attempted murder, and administering a harmful substance. These accusations were related to an alleged attack against the mayor of Ziguinchor.
Recently released thanks to an amnesty law passed by the National Assembly, Yarga Sy shared his version of the events upon his release. He claimed that the accusations against him were solely meant to tarnish his reputation and put him at odds with Ousmane Sonko. “It wasn’t about one individual spraying another with a substance. It was about an individual who decided to soak a handkerchief in vinegar to give to another. It was actually a handkerchief in the colors of green, yellow, and red that I had soaked in vinegar and gave to my political leader who was in a very complicated situation at that time,” explained Yarga Sy to TFM channel.
Yarga Sy also emphasized the importance of Sonko’s support, stating that Sonko never doubted him. “But what reassured me the most was that the accusations that arose were made by people. The important thing in this matter is to see where these accusations come from, and it is also crucial that when there is an accusation, the accused person is at peace with their conscience. Because Ousmane Sonko himself and his entourage knew that everything that was being said was nonsense and that it didn’t hold up. These were baseless accusations made by people, and that’s why it never really affected me,” he added.
Sy’s arrest raised questions among some observers, with some suggesting that the prosecutor may have acted to harm Sonko’s circle. Faced with these allegations, Ousmane Sonko defended Sy publicly, stating, “Mr. Yarga Sy has nothing to do with that matter. He is someone I can entrust my life to.”
Ousmane Sonko himself had announced in a video posted on social media that he had been the victim of an assassination attempt in a highly charged political context. The incidents in which Mr. Sonko claims to have been the target of an assassination attempt occurred on the sidelines of the defamation trial filed against him by the former Minister of Tourism and Leisure, Mame Mbaye Niang, a member of the APR party, the political party of the former President of the Republic, Macky Sall.
