The new President of the Republic of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has started his term off strong. Shortly after taking his oath and completing the handover of power at the presidential palace, he held his first audience, a strategic meeting to set out his vision for the country.
In a powerful symbolic gesture, President Faye met with the head of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Makhtar Diop, along with Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. This meeting was an opportunity to discuss the priority areas for development in Senegal.
According to statements by Makhtar Diop, former Vice President of the World Bank for Africa and former Minister of Economy and Finance of Senegal, as reported by Les Échos, the discussions focused on the directions that the new government intends to implement. The key sectors identified were Agriculture, Housing, Digitalization, and the Economy.
In a context where the mobilization of domestic resources is crucial to ensure adequate financing of the economy, President Faye seems determined to make the private sector an essential partner in this dynamic. Makhtar Diop expressed his admiration for the authorities’ vision regarding the crucial role that the private sector must play in the country’s economic development.
Among the initiatives discussed during this meeting is one aimed at supporting Senegalese entrepreneurs so that they can fully contribute to financing the national economy. In this regard, the IFC is committed to strengthening its support for national champions through dedicated programs.
