The new government, unveiled yesterday to general applause, is receiving unconditional praise. However, a striking observation is not going unnoticed: the lack of female representation. This deficiency has been pointed out by several observers, including Alioune Tine, thus highlighting one of the weaknesses of this new governing team.

Three days after the appointment of a prime minister, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye issued a decree announcing the appointment of the members of the government, consisting of a team of 25 ministers and 5 state secretaries. An initial point of observation lies in the incorporation of military officers at the helm of strategic departments such as Interior and the Armed Forces, with the aim of strengthening national security and stability.

According to Alioune Tine, president of the Afrikajom Center, the absence of women in key positions is a missed opportunity to display the boldness, novelty, and rupture that have been long awaited. “This is one of the weaknesses of the government: the under-representation of women,” he notes. He believes it would have been revolutionary to have a woman leading the Ministry of Interior or the Armed Forces. “These portfolios should not be exclusively reserved for men,” he asserts with conviction.
