A petition has been submitted to the United Nations Working Group regarding the fate of the presidential candidate for the upcoming March 24th elections, Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
According to Les Échos, the request was filed by the Foundation for Human Rights (HRF), which deems his detention “arbitrary.”
“The numerous irregularities in the proceedings against Bassirou Diomaye Faye show that he is being held solely for sharing a critical opinion of President Macky Sall on Facebook. The goal is to prevent him from participating in the campaign, knowing how popular the political party he represents (former Pastef) is,” says Hannah Van Dijcke, legal and research officer at HRF, as reported by the news daily.
“Diomaye will benefit from the amnesty law, but I’m not sure exactly when he will be released, as there is a procedure,” states his lawyer, Me Moussa Sarr, quoted by Senego.
