Behind Diomaye’s triumph, this election also delivered its share of major losers. Amadou Ba at the forefront, humiliated from the first round. But the shockwave did not spare Macky, Khalifa, or Idy, all soaked in their ambitions.
While Bassirou Diomaye Faye and the Pastef coalition won a crushing victory in the first round, the presidential election also had its share of major losers, according to an analysis by Seneweb.
The main one remains without a doubt Amadou Ba, the candidate of the ruling majority. “For a former Prime Minister, it is a real humiliation to be soundly defeated in the first round by the main opposition party,” the media points out.
His mentor Macky Sall also undergoes a “sad end” after trying to obstruct the electoral process, only to be disavowed. “We still wonder what this threat was that Macky Sall was so agitated about,” Seneweb wonders, estimating that he “lost everything” after sidelining Sonko.
“History will remember that he chose a candidate and then turned his back on him. Not only did he not support Amadou Ba, but he weakened him,” adds the media, predicting the “implosion” of the ruling party.
Among the other losers are allies like the Parti S and the AFP “who did not want to have a candidate,” but also Khalifa Sall. After being sidelined in 2019, the former mayor of Dakar “was expecting to be the kingmaker” but “there is great disappointment within Taxawu,” reports Seneweb.
Idrissa Seck “paid the price for his inconsistency” by dropping from 26% in 2019 to 1% this year, according to projections. “His inconsistency was heavily punished.”
Bougane Guèye Dany, “convinced that he was the man for the job,” is also listed among the losers, having once again missed the endorsements.
Finally, Aliou Mamadou Dia’s Party of Unity and Gathering “significantly declined” despite expectations, concludes Seneweb’s analysis.
