Novice in politics, Anta Babacar Ngom remains determined. At the head of a citizen movement, this 40-year-old economist aims to place education and youth at the heart of the presidential debate.
Anta Babacar Ngom is the only woman running in the upcoming presidential election in Senegal. Furthermore, she is the youngest candidate. Since declaring her candidacy, the CEO of SEDIMA has been doing everything possible to convince others of her presidential project.
“Senegalese citizens, it is because I want to revive hope that I am running for the presidential election in Senegal. I am a candidate for the presidential election,” she declared at the official launch of her movement Alternative for Citizen Renewal (ARC) on the esplanade of the Grand Théâtre Doudou Ndiaye Coumba-Rose last July. She is Anta Babacar Ngom, CEO of SEDIMA.
As an emblematic figure of female success in the African business world, she has decided to engage in politics and run for the highest office in the Republic of Senegal. On February 20th, after the revision of the candidate list for the upcoming presidential election by the Constitutional Council, following the withdrawal of Rose Wardini, she remained the only woman in the race, facing 18 men. At 40 years old, she also represents a rejuvenation of the political class in Senegal.
Despite being a novice in the political arena and the youngest candidate, she has left her mark in the field of sponsorship, an important step to be able to run for president. The founder of the Alternative for Citizen Renewal movement has almost traveled all over the country to make herself known and convince others of her presidential project.
In this project, she aims to not only “revive hope” among young people by combating illegal migration, but also to rebuild the Senegalese school system if she is elected president. This includes “education and vocational training” to develop a new generation of leaders who will be able to “meet future challenges”. The uniqueness of this program lies in the compulsory nature of schooling from the age of 6, with the generalization of English education for all. Among other aspects of Anta Babacar Ngom’s program are the establishment of a civic service for young people, the creation of a Ministry of Religious Affairs, and the eradication of begging in the streets. Anta Babacar is also involved in women’s issues.
Anta Babacar Ngom studied in Canada at York University in Toronto, where she obtained a Master’s degree in Economics, and in France at Paris Dauphine University with a Master’s degree in International Project Management and ICT. She also holds an Executive MBA in Communication from Science Po Paris. Since 2016, Anta Babacar Ngom has been at the helm of the family business SEDIMA (Senegalese distributor of poultry equipment), specializing in poultry farming and founded by her father, Babacar Ngom. Her career there began in 2009, where she held various positions. Anta Babacar Ngom is married and a mother of three children.
