Newly elected, the President of the Republic Bassirou Diomaye Faye will make his first international appearance in Mauritania. He will be welcomed at the Nouakchott airport by his Mauritanian counterpart, Mohamed Cheikh El Ghazouani, who also holds the presidency of the African Union. According to the newspaper “Le Témoin”, this official visit comes at a time of strengthening ties and cooperation between Senegal and Mauritania, especially as both countries face new economic and security challenges.
One of the main issues to be discussed during this visit is the joint and secure exploitation of the Grand Tortue/Ahmeyim (GTA) gas field, which straddles the Senegalese-Mauritanian maritime border and is estimated to have reserves of 450 billion cubic meters. Another important topic is terrorism in the Sahel region. Additionally, the issue of fishing licenses granted by Mauritania to Senegalese fishermen as part of a partnership will be addressed.
The newspaper “Le Témoin” is convinced that Presidents Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Mohamed Cheikh El Ghazouani will also discuss the transhumance of Mauritanian livestock to Senegal, particularly during the dry season marked by increased insecurity on the Eastern border with Mali, among other topics.
