Senegal: The governor sets up a regional crisis committee – Africa Links 24

A boat filled with illegal migrants washed ashore off the coast of Saint-Louis this Wednesday morning. The death toll stands at around twenty, with two bodies recovered around 11 a.m., one injured person who succumbed to their injuries, and 21 bodies found on the beach around 5 p.m. The governor of Saint-Louis is currently at the scene. Alioune Badara Samb announced that a regional crisis committee has been set up.

“This morning, we were informed of a boat sinking that was supposedly headed abroad, with the discovery of two lifeless bodies and two injured individuals who washed up on the beach. The injured were taken to a medical facility for treatment. Unfortunately, there are around twenty injured individuals, and one person has died in the hospital,” stated Alioune Badara Samb, governor of Saint-Louis.

He added, “Since the afternoon, we have been witnessing the washing ashore of lifeless bodies. We have activated the regional crisis committee to ensure that the bodies can be recovered. The Minister of the Interior has been informed. Currently, we are in contact with our colleagues from Louga and Thiès to determine how to transfer these bodies to morgues.”

Regarding legal matters, Mr. Samb mentioned that the Prosecutor of the Republic will be handling the case.
