Following the revision of the electoral calendar setting the presidential election on March 24 and the electoral campaign from March 9 to 22, the European Union Electoral Observation Mission in Senegal (EU EOM), present in the country since January 13 at the invitation of the Senegalese authorities, continues all its activities in accordance with the new deadlines.

“The Mission is aware of the new electoral calendar and is observing the progress of the electoral campaign as well as the preparations for the election. We call for full respect for freedom of expression, press freedom, access to offline and online information, and the right to assembly during this campaign,” said Malin Björk, the head of the EU EOM who will return to Senegal on March 20.

“We emphasize the importance of ensuring equal opportunities for all candidates in the electoral campaign. In this regard, we take note of the release, on March 14, of one of the presidential candidates who was detained, and hope that this will contribute to a peaceful and non-violent campaign,” specified Malin Björk.

The 10 electoral experts present in Dakar will be joined by 28 long-term observers who will be deployed on March 18 in all 14 regions of the country. A second group of 42 observers will be deployed on March 22.

This system will be strengthened on the day of the election by diplomats from EU member countries stationed in Dakar, as well as by a delegation of members of the European Parliament.

On the day of the vote on March 24, the EU EOM will have approximately 100 observers covering all 46 Senegalese departments.

The Mission will present its initial conclusions on March 26 at a press conference at the EU EOM headquarters in Dakar.
