During his intervention on the program Objection on Sud Fm, this Sunday, March 10, 2024, Abou Abel Thiam, member of the national executive secretariat of the APR (Alliance for the Republic, the ruling party), accused the Constitutional Council of creating “judicial and institutional turmoil”. He also claimed that the decision of the Constitutional Council to include Bassirou Diomaye Faye in the electoral lists was the first step towards “amnesty”.

“What the Constitutional Council did by admitting the candidacy of Bassirou Diomaye Faye is a flaw. It ignored the decree dissolving the party to which he belongs, making him a candidate, therefore, the Constitutional Council was the first to open the door to amnesty for the events. You cannot be president if you have had such a relationship with the State of Senegal. You cannot be the leader of a state that you have contributed to destabilize. He was arrested by the police, he was brought to justice. From the moment there are these charges, I doubt that an electoral judge can erase everything,” he declared.

According to Mr. Thiam, the composition of the list of candidates has been the source of many problems, leading to disputes and disruptions in the electoral process. He noted that even some candidates suggested to the head of state to extend his mandate, thus highlighting divisions among the political actors.

For the member of the APR, “It is the decisions of the Constitutional Council that have created the judicial and institutional turmoil that we have experienced and that halted the process. I will explain to you why. Manifestly, the decision of the Constitutional Council establishing the list of candidates for the presidential election was problematic. Regardless of the subjective nature of others, everyone agrees that this decision produced the list of either 20 or 19 candidates. I remind you that the head of state, if he was solely driven by the desire to extend his mandate by an hour, 2 years, or 2 months, could have done so. Because he was invited by some candidates to do so,” he revealed.

He further stated that among the 19 candidates, there is at least one who cannot read or write. “I know of one. Among the 19 candidates, there is at least one who cannot read or write in French. For me, the truth is that it is this list that is problematic. And because of it, we had all the judicial and institutional turmoil that followed,” he argued.
