The National Assembly adopted, on Wednesday, March 6, the bill granting amnesty for acts of violence related to politics, occurring between February 2021 and February 2024.

The bill would grant amnesty for “all acts that could be considered criminal offenses committed between February 1, 2021, and February 25, 2024, both in Senegal and abroad, relating to demonstrations or having political motivations.”

Senegal experienced various episodes of riots, clashes, looting, and pillaging between 2021 and 2023, triggered by the power struggle between opposition leader Ousmane Sonko and the government. In February 2024, Senegal was once again plagued by unrest after the announcement of the election postponement.

Dozens of people were killed, hundreds were injured, and hundreds more were arrested.

The amnesty aims to “calm the political and social climate,” according to the presidency.

Dozens of opposition members could regain their freedom as soon as the law is published in the Official Journal. However, many political and social actors are against the project, protesting that no members of the security forces or government officials would have to be held accountable.
