Human rights organizations ARTICLE 19 Senegal and West Africa, Amnesty International Senegal, the Senegalese League of Human Rights (LSDH), the African Meeting for the Defense of Human Rights (RADDHO), AfrikaJom Center and AfricTivistes “strongly condemn the physical assault against the journalist and Director of the television channel 7TV, Maimouna Ndour Faye,” as stated in a press release received by PressAfrik.
They demand that an “investigation be carried out so that the perpetrators are identified and held accountable before the courts in a fair trial.”
“We express our solidarity with Maimouna Ndour Faye and wish her a speedy recovery,” they state.
The organizations emphasize that this “assault is part of a series of attacks against journalists and media in recent years, most of which have remained unpunished.”
According to them, all “forms of physical violence directed at journalists are crimes against society, as they violate freedom of expression and, consequently, other rights and freedoms enshrined in international human rights instruments.”
The six human rights organizations call on the State of Senegal to conduct an “investigation so that the perpetrators are identified and the guilty parties are severely punished, and; to strengthen security measures for journalists, including the establishment of protection and security mechanisms when covering sensitive or risky events while considering the specific needs of female media professionals in terms of protection and security related to their work.”
The signatory organizations are:
– Alassane SECK (LSDH)
– Alfred Nkuru BULAKALI (ARTICLE 19 Senegal and West Africa)
– Alioune Tine (AfrikaJom Center)
– Cheikh FALL (AfricTivistes)
– Sadikh NIASSE (RADDHO)
– Seydi Gassama (Amnesty International Senegal)
