For the preparations of the Tabaski festival, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of the Republic has given instructions to his government. Through a circular signed by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, three strong measures have been taken, as reported by Seneweb. Here is the official document.

Subject: Preparation for Tabaski 2024

Ladies and gentlemen ministers,

The President of the Republic has instructed the Government to take appropriate measures for the proper organization of the Tabaski festival in 2024, ensuring, in particular, to meet the high demand by adequately supplying the market with sheep through the mobilization of national supply on one hand, and on the other hand, importing from neighboring countries, notably Mali and Mauritania.

In this perspective, in order to provide a conducive environment and sufficient security for national and foreign operators respectively at the borders, along transport routes, waiting areas, and sales points, the following measures should be applied from April 19 to August 2, 2024:

– relaxation of control of trucks and vehicles transporting sheep to Senegal;
– exemption of duties and taxes on Tabaski sheep;
– authorization of three (3) shepherds onboard each truck responsible for the surveillance of the transported animals.

Furthermore, in accordance with decree no. 2002-1094 of November 4, 2002, concerning the health regulations of domestic animals, strict compliance with hygiene and safety measures for a smooth operation is required [..] as stated in a circular signed by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.

The President is keen on ensuring that every aspect of the preparation for Tabaski 2024 is well thought out, including providing ample supply of sheep, both locally and through imports from neighboring countries. The government is taking proactive measures to facilitate the transportation of sheep, including relaxing controls on vehicles carrying livestock and exempting duties and taxes on Tabaski sheep.

The presence of shepherds to monitor the animals during transport is also mandated to ensure the safety of the animals. Additionally, strict adherence to sanitary and safety measures for the welfare of both the animals and the public is emphasized. The government is taking all necessary steps to ensure a successful and smooth Tabaski festival in 2024.
