Diamniadio, 27 Feb (APS) – The President of the Republic stated that he will engage parliamentary members from the presidential majority and even those from the opposition to vote on the amnesty law that he will have adopted in the Council of Ministers this Wednesday.
“I will engage the deputies of our majority, our leaders, and even the opposition deputies to vote for this amnesty law to overcome these difficulties,” said President Macky Sall on Monday evening at the opening of the national dialogue at the CICAD to find a consensus date for the organization of the presidential election.
The Head of State announced on Monday in Diamniadio his decision to adopt, on Wednesday in the Council of Ministers, a draft law granting amnesty for events related to political events that occurred in the country between 2021 and 2024, which will soon be submitted to the National Assembly.
“In a spirit of national reconciliation, I will submit to the National Assembly this Wednesday after its approval in the Council of Ministers, a draft law for a general amnesty on events related to political demonstrations that occurred between 2021 and 2024,” he said at the opening of the national dialogue being held at the Abdou Diouf International Conference Center (CICAD) in Diamniadio.
Some political leaders have disapproved of the proposal for a “general amnesty law for events related to political events that occurred between 2021 and 2024.”
“We are in a state of law. Anyone who commits acts contrary to the law will face justice. That is why I oppose the amnesty law,” said lawyer El Hadji Diouf participating in the national dialogue at the Abdou-Diouf International Conference Center.
Mr. Diouf, leader of a political party, also welcomed the holding of the dialogue.
Samba Sy, Secretary General of the Party for Independence and Labor (PIT) and Minister of Labor, hinted that he disapproved of the proposed amnesty law announced by the Head of State.
“(…) my party cannot hear, support, accept that the university was burned, my party cannot forget that two young girls were burned in a bus. My party does not understand how, under the guise of politics, one can attack water and electricity supply facilities. My party does not think it is feasible to attack gendarmerie barracks. I am not saying that we should not reconcile but we do not forget, so that tomorrow, the same causes do not produce the same effects,” said Mr. Sy.
According to the Head of State, amnesty and forgiveness are the main means to help Senegal overcome the “difficult moments” experienced by the country during this period. Macky Sall emphasized the need to safeguard national unity and the rule of law, among other things, to preserve peace and democratic values in Senegal.
The President noted that “there are times in a country when one must know how to move beyond.”
“This does not mean that we have not seen the damage that has been done, but if you leave things as they are, more serious damage can still occur, with deaths,” said President Macky Sall, emphasizing acting as “President of the Republic, guardian of the constitution, and guarantor of national unity.”
