Baytir, better known as El Hadj FALL, is the son of this Commune, called by its inhabitants “the Gaza of Senegal”, which had inadvertently taken the lead during the violent clashes that occurred between the peaceful natives of this beautiful Dakar commune and the National Gendarmerie Headquarters from 18 to 21 April 2023. For a land dispute over a communal plot coveted by the gendarmes to set up a worthy brigade, the two parties had engaged in a tense dialogue that unfortunately escalated tensions and sparked violence.
While people everywhere in Senegal and the Muslim world were busy celebrating the Korité festival after a very challenging month of fasting, a real intifada eventually took hold in the commune, with extremely violent clashes.
The subsequent repression was of extreme cruelty, resulting in an incredible toll, with fires, destruction, and looting across the communal territory in response to live ammunition fired at unarmed populations, violence carried out even in invaded and gassed homes, arrests and torture resulting in a particularly heavy toll in terms of victims of more or less serious injuries and, inevitably, deaths.
The viral videos of these tragic events, which had turned this peaceful locality into a field of ruins, had circulated worldwide. NGOR is still healing from its wounds, counting its poor victims of very serious injuries still under treatment, and praying for those who, like El Hadji FALL, had been able to benefit from temporary release after a few months of detention following their indictment on serious charges that could not be proven.
Made famous by one of these videos showing him being dragged out of his home and beaten, molested, and tortured with extraordinary brutality by a squad of bullies, El Hadji FALL indeed underwent a torture unlike any other, unfortunately etched forever in people’s minds.
After unjust imprisonment, the child of NGOR was able to be evacuated abroad by his family for more appropriate care.
He returned in better health, but apparently the damage caused by the torture endured was so irreparable that all hope of recovery had become illusory. Baytir passed away after being hospitalized in Ziguinchor, where he had gone with European clients, work being second nature to him…
The body will be transported by ambulance to Dakar on Friday morning.
Peace to his soul. The deepest condolences of the country to his grieving family, to the entire population of Ngor, to his Baaye Fall community as well as to the Layène family of the very holy Limamou Mahdi to whom he entrusted the care of handing him over to his Lord and Master.
