The countdown to the end of the presidential term in Senegal continues to generate debates and questions. While April 2 is designated as the deadline, voices are rising to clarify the procedures to be followed in case of transition.

According to the Minister of the Interior, Sidiki Kaba, the question of presidential interim is back in the spotlight. If the President of the National Assembly, Amadou Mame Diop, were to assume the interim presidency from April 2, the end of the outgoing president Macky Sall’s term, it would lead to the resumption of the entire electoral process. This statement adds a new dimension to an already complex scenario.

However, this opinion is not shared by all constitutional experts. According to renowned constitutionalist Mounirou Sy, the situation differs from what was put forward by the Minister of the Interior. According to him, “on April 2, at the end of Macky Sall’s term, the electoral process continues, but is not resumed.” He explains on RFM that “in this case, the President of the National Assembly assumes a substitute role” because “it is not a vacancy of power.”
