Violent clashes have erupted at the Bonaba Café site in the municipality of Tivaouane Peulh Niague, between landowners and a private security hired by the mayor of the municipality. More than 600 families accuse the mayor of attempting to illegally appropriate their plots of land.

The landowners, claiming a land portion of 29 hectares, were forced to halt their construction work that had already begun. These rightful owners expressed their anger towards the mayor of Tivaouane Peulh Niague, accusing him of trying to take over their hard-earned lands: “He is a crook… We have worked hard to buy these lands.”

According to Rfm, among the 650 beneficiaries of land titles, some had already built their houses, but the mayor of the municipality razed everything last September, as stated by Bourama Magane, a member of the owners’ collective.

“Papis Diop, the mayor of Tivaouane Peulh Niague, wants to recover our lands acquired since 2012. When he was elected mayor in 2016, he himself signed the documents. To take back these lands, he will have to pass over our dead bodies,” he denounced.
