On Wednesday, the amnesty bill is being discussed in the National Assembly. During an interview with Seneweb in the “Special Interview,” Mame Makhtar Guéye expressed his disagreement regarding this amnesty bill. According to him, at the very least, Macky Sall should first take inspiration from the amnesty law adopted by Abdoulaye Wade several years ago.
“Not only are we (Jamra) against this amnesty law, but we have also written to the President to express our disagreement and the reasons for it,” he stated. Mame Makhtar Guéye believes that in order for this law to pass, it should be backed by legal frameworks and ethical principles, just like Abdoulaye Wade did.
“We all know what happened. We saw a police officer take his gun, aim at a person, and then shoot them. We also saw a mob attack a bus. Now, with this law, are they trying to tell us that they did nothing wrong? (…) We asked Macky Sall to apply legal formalities and surround this law with ethical principles, like Abdoulaye Wade did. But it should not be rushed. These individuals must be judged so that responsibilities can be determined. Then, if he (Macky Sall) wants to pardon them, he should do so before granting them amnesty. Abdoulaye Wade took all of this into account. He pardoned the responsible parties before granting them amnesty. Additionally, he also compensated the families because what they went through was very difficult,” shared the vice president of the NGO Jamra on Seneweb.
It is important to note that the Minister of Justice, Aissata Tall Sall, announced on Wednesday in the National Assembly that there will be a compensation mechanism. “The Minister of Justice informed that following the adoption of this text and in accordance with the President’s recommendations, a compensation mechanism will be put in place for the families of the victims,” as stated in the report of the laws committee read in plenary.
