In an article, Mamadou Fall from the APR highlights the ingratitude of some political collaborators towards Macky Sall, accusing two close advisors of betrayal after his electoral defeat. He laments the lack of recognition for the outgoing president’s achievements and warns against orchestrated criticism that tarnishes his political legacy.
“Defining the greatest merit of the high magistrate in relation to the statesman to whom he owes his position, a great French intellectual spoke of ‘the duty of ingratitude’.
In our Tropics, it is distressing to see that many collaborators of leaders called to leave power apply in the cruelest ways to their benefactor, the one to whom they owe everything, this beautiful maxim, thus draining it of all its essence. Indeed, as soon as the end of the regime established by the relentless verdict of the ballot boxes is announced, miserable rabid dogs who have long been wrapped in sheep’s clothing begin to shoot at point-blank range at the outgoing president, who has rendered them their best services of their poor existence.
In the last few hours, President Macky Sall has been portrayed in unflattering terms, and unexpectedly, by people who, in principle, should only speak to celebrate him with strong superlatives. Two of them particularly caught our attention. They are Oumar Sow (Special Advisor to the President) and Moustapha Diakhaté (former president of the parliamentary group Benno Bokk Yakaar).
The first, it should be noted, is known as a dwarf among political dwarfs. A former street vendor in an African country with no degree or any worthy qualification, Mr. Sow is a confirmed loser, who was again defeated in the last election in the Yeumbeul constituency, where he never managed to establish himself as a leader under the banner of the ruling party. This gentleman, with almost no successful achievements, hastened to be invited to the TV to criticize ‘Macky’, making absurd allegations against him. According to him, the resounding defeat of Mr. Amadou BA was nothing more than the result of a machiavellian will orchestrated by the very person who supported his candidacy, President Macky Sall. And to justify his accusations, the man lined up many anecdotal explanations that any reasonable person would struggle to endorse.
As for the second, he is so accustomed to blunders and enormities that it is not even worth subjecting his (always sensational) interventions to critical examination. Apparently very angry at the man who lifted him from the status of a ‘nobody’ to elevate him to a prominent politician with particularly honorable responsibilities, Mr. Diakhaté angrily lashed out at his greatest benefactor, accusing him of betraying his party, and beyond that, the Senegalese people.
Why? Because during recent times, he allegedly engaged in base calculations just to derail the candidacy of Mr. Amadou BA, who had defied him. According to him, the postponement of the election for which Macky Sall burned all his republican professions of faith was solely aimed at keeping Mr. Amadou BA out of the race in order to choose another candidate in whom he really trusted.
The outgoing president does not deserve this!
The disloyal stance of these two ‘vipers’ is just the tip of the iceberg. Indeed, as Macky Sall sheds his role as head of state, we will see many former flatterers repeatedly serve up incredibly negative reviews, which they would never have concocted if the victory had been on the side of the majority. What is even more bewildering is that we have been told that all these waves of condemnation rolling towards ‘Macky’ (and which are far from over!) are carefully orchestrated by a man whose low maneuvers to access power failed. He is allegedly commanding critical assessments against ‘Macky’ everywhere. It is unbelievable, isn’t it?
So it is a sad fate for men who have had the distinguished honor of serving their people at the highest level of the state! Today, as defeat has finally planted its claws in the pretensions, for incomprehensible reasons, we want to bury everything that this man has brought in terms of concrete actions towards the emergence of this country that is so dear to us. We want to forget that he brought the Senegalese together through an unprecedented extension of the road network; through an exponential development of production tracks; through rural electrification work on an unprecedented scale. We want to forget that he enhanced the dignity of the image of many religious sites by ordering the construction of unquestionably modern infrastructure. We want to forget that he waged a fierce war against poverty and destitution by containing the spiral of impoverishment through the miraculous family allowance policy. We want to forget that he granted an unprecedented increase in the salaries of our dear and brave teachers. We want to forget that he put an end to the legendary ordeal of travelers who, for many years, had to spend dozens of hours to cross the small stretch that connects Senegal to the Gambia.
It is a truly sad way to thank a president who has done all that, and much more. He is certainly not without faults, on some points. But the truth is that at this time, as he is preparing to leave power after congratulating his successor, we should make the effort to remember above all the great strides he has made for this country during the twelve years he held power. For as the poet Aragon so aptly said, ‘in the face of two interpretations, we must always choose the most generous one’.”
