On Sunday, March 24, 2024, as Senegal experienced a crucial day with the presidential election, outgoing President Macky Sall, whose term ends on April 2, fulfilled his civic duty by voting in the region of Fatick, where he is originally from. After casting his vote, President Sall delivered a speech aiming to unite and call for responsibility, especially regarding the announcement of results.

In his address, Macky Sall first expressed his gratitude to the Senegalese people for their political maturity and sense of duty, highlighting that the electoral campaign unfolded in a calm and serene manner, despite the specific circumstances of the year. He also emphasized the smooth conduct of voting across the entire national territory from the morning of the election.

The president highlighted the reliability of the Senegalese electoral system, in which all candidates are represented at polling stations and where the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENA) plays a key role with a representative in each polling station. He specified that provisional results would be displayed in front of each polling station immediately after the ballot count, followed by the work of the departmental vote counting commissions, under the supervision of the magistrates of the court of appeal of Dakar.

Macky Sall reiterated that only the Constitutional Council is authorized to announce the final results of the election. He firmly emphasized that no candidate or political party should declare victory before this official announcement. The goal of his message was to preserve peace and stability in the country, while awaiting the formal validation of the Senegalese people’s choice by the competent authorities.
