On Tuesday, March 12, 2024, candidate Khalifa Ababacar Sall was in the 3rd electoral district of Senegal, Mbour, where he was greeted by a large crowd. Khalifa Sall addressed the issues faced by fishermen and hoteliers, the two pillars of the economy of the Petite Côte.
“Our visit to the market was a strong moment of communion. We had different opinions and protests that are seen as suggestions. They tell us that the current fishing situation, as experienced by the fishermen of Mbour, is not benefiting them at all. They say that fishing licenses should be abolished, the exploitation of our waters should be reorganized. Our fishermen should be the primary and majority beneficiaries in this sector. We all agree that fishing licenses are a calamity. The fishermen are living a real hell. They invest a lot of money, but they do not see a return on their investment,” laments the president of Taxawu Sénégal.
Regarding tourism, the former mayor of Dakar believes that the value chain needs to be reestablished. “All meals served in hotels should come from our fish. Fruits and vegetables should come from our own sources. When we achieve this, tourism will be beneficial. As long as we need to import food to feed tourists, what will we gain? The Senegalese working in hotels, like chambermaids and cooks, deserve to be hotel owners, shareholders, and hotel managers. That is the ambition!” declares candidate Khalifa Sall, who promises to change the situation once elected to lead the country.
