The appearance of the moon in Senegal, marking the beginning of Ramadan, is subject to controversy. Although its appearance was announced in Keur Massar on Sunday evening, this information is not unanimously accepted.
Oumar Diène, the general coordinator of the lunar commission, recently commented on the alleged appearance of the moon in Keur Massar. According to him, no representative observed the crescent moon on site. He specified that several representatives, including the president of the Imams, Secretary General Baka Diop, and the Oulémas, were present, totaling at least 400 people, but no one reported seeing it. He emphasized that the commission has 22,000 imams throughout Senegal, and if the moon appeared, the result would be immediate each month.
It is worth noting that the Coordination of Muslims in Senegal (CMS), comprising various Sunni movements in the country, has set the beginning of the month of Ramadan on Monday, March 11, 2024, having claimed to have observed the crescent moon in Keur Massar according to their announcement.
