Interior Minister Sidiki Kaba held a press conference on Thursday regarding the proposals put forward during the national dialogue. He emphasized the end of President Macky Sall’s mandate on April 2nd.

Kaba stated that it will be up to the Constitutional Council to determine how the country will be governed after April 2nd. According to the Minister of the Interior, two situations are possible: either the Constitutional Council may decide that the President will continue to lead the country after April 2nd until the installation of his successor, in accordance with article 36-2. Or the 7 wise men may decide that he will leave power after April 2nd.

In the latter scenario, Kaba adds, it will be the President of the National Assembly who will lead the country until the installation of the next President of the Republic. He also specifies that “the entire electoral process will be restarted, there are no longer any acquired rights for the 19 candidates, as the President of the National Assembly must organize new elections.”
