The leader of the Taxawu Sénégal coalition, Khalifa Sall, is fundamentally against the position of vice-president in Senegal. He reiterated his position on the idea raised by some presidential candidates this Thursday in Joal. The former mayor of Dakar claims to have learned from the events of 1962 between Senghor and Mamadou Dia.
“We must reduce the powers of the President of the Republic by rebalancing the institutions and strengthening the powers of the Prime Minister. I have learned from 1962. I want to avoid the duality at the top of the state with the election by universal suffrage of a vice-president,” Khalifa Sall stated. “When I am President, the Prime Minister will be the head of the government with strong responsibilities. I will reform the National Assembly by restoring its powers. It will thus have the power of censorship without constraints,” adds the candidate of the Taxawu Dakar coalition.
Khalifa also promises to build a state based on the principles and ethics handed down by the founding fathers of the nation.
“When I am President of the Republic, I will build a new Senegal based on the principles and ethics that the founding fathers of this country have left us. We will refer to the national consultations to establish strong institutions so that any President of the Republic cannot use them to fight opponents,” he said.
