Senegal’s Krepin Diatta may face disciplinary action for accusing the Confederation of African Football (CAF) of being “corrupt” following their team’s loss to Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday. The Monaco winger made the outburst as he was leaving the stadium in Yamoussoukro, the Ivorian capital, and it was overheard by reporters.
Ivory Coast won the last-16 tie 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, maintaining a trend where no reigning champion has won an AFCON knockout tie since Egypt in 2010. Diatta was upset after Senegal was not granted a penalty early in the second half when Ismaila Sarr was fouled in the Ivory Coast box. Despite Senegal’s lead at the time, the Gabonese referee did not point to the spot or review the footage on the pitchside monitor.
Diatta voiced his frustration, stating it was unfair that the VAR was used to award Ivory Coast a penalty but not to review the incident involving Sarr. He felt that the decision had severely affected their competition.
Ivory Coast will move on to the quarter-finals to play against Mali or Burkina Faso, while Senegal’s exit from the tournament comes with controversy and the possibility of Diatta facing disciplinary consequences for his comments.
