Prominent figure in the fight against malaria, the leader of the Actions Movement is entering politics. The head of the parasitology department at UCAD now wants to use his expertise and international experience for the benefit of Senegal.

The initiator of the “Actions” movement, Professor Daouda Ndiaye, head of the parasitology department at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar (UCAD), a “native of Pikine”, will run for president in the March 24 election.

As head of the parasitology department at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar and special advisor to Harvard University in Boston (USA), Daouda Ndiaye gained public recognition through the activities of his “Actions” movement. Ndiaye is running as an independent candidate in the February 25 presidential election, having successfully gathered 46,656 sponsors.

“Many challenges await us, challenges that we must face together. That is why I would like to declare my candidacy for the 2024 presidential election,” he said on July 6 during a press conference to announce his candidacy.

“If I was able to go to school, benefit from a healthcare system, education, and succeed in life as a native of the suburbs, it is because I benefited from the money of the Senegalese taxpayer,” he explained when setting up his movement.

He added, “Through taxes collected, paid by Senegalese who may not have had the same opportunities as I did to succeed.”

“So it is my turn to help these Senegalese and children of Senegalese without distinction of regions, cities, villages, ethnicities, or cultures. I feel it is my duty to repay this debt to Senegal, which has given me everything,” the pharmacy professor believes.

The social movement “Actions Sen Tawféex, Sunu Yiité” is particularly active in education, health, solidarity, and the environment because, in his opinion, there is a debt owed to Senegal and the Senegalese community as a whole.

Professor Daouda Ndiaye, an expert in parasitology and mycology, is also the head of the parasitology department at the Aristide le Dantec University Hospital in Dakar. He is the Director of the African Center of Excellence in Genomics and Infectious Diseases in Senegal. In 2016, he invented the “illumigene malaria” test, which revolutionized malaria screening.

Daouda Ndiaye proudly identifies himself as a son of the Dakar suburbs. Born in Pikine, specifically in Guinaw Rails, he completed his primary and secondary education in Pikine and obtained his baccalaureate at the Seydina Limamoulaye High School in Guédiawaye in 1992 before joining medical school.

As the Francophone and Lusophone Africa Director of the WHO International Course on Malaria Diagnosis Accreditation, the Professor also established the African Center of Excellence in Genomic Infectious Diseases.

Having survived malaria as a young man, he set a goal to work towards eradicating the disease.

A member of the UCAD Scientific Council, he received the Francophone Pharmacy Prize from the French Academy of Pharmacy in 2020 for his groundbreaking discovery of the “Illumigene-Malaria” malaria test in 2016.

In 1997, he was the only candidate admitted to the Medicine and Pharmacy Internship competition at Hospitals in Dakar.
