As the presidential election of March 24, 2024 approaches, rumors indicate a possible change of candidate by Senegalese President Macky Sall, less than two weeks before the election. According to information from the reliable newspaper Les Échos, Macky Sall is considering replacing Amadou Ba, previously designated as the candidate of the Benno Bokk Yaakaar coalition, with Mouhamed Boune Abdallah Dionne.
This reversal comes in a context of intensive political negotiations. Les Échos also reveals that Karim Wade is actively being solicited to support this new project, by endorsing the candidacy of Mouhamed Boune Abdallah Dionne. However, the Democratic Front for an Inclusive Election (FDPEI), which includes non-selected candidates, including that of the PDS, is currently focusing on a legal approach to the Supreme Court against the decree convening the electoral body for March 24.
It is important to remember that Macky Sall’s initial decision to support Amadou Ba had caused tensions within the presidential coalition, leading to defections. Mouhamed Boune Abdallah Dionne had even expressed his dissatisfaction by running directly to the electorate for the presidential election, without the initial support of the coalition. The next few hours should clarify whether a change in candidacy will be officially announced by the President of the Republic.
