Boubacar Séye, a researcher and consultant in international migrations and founding president of the organization Horizon without Borders, publicly expressed his desire yesterday, Monday, April 15, 2024, to see the former President of Senegal, Macky Sall, subject to an international arrest warrant. This request comes shortly after Macky Sall was replaced by Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the head of the country.

In a statement circulated on social media, accompanied by a photo of the former president, Boubacar Séye articulated his wish to see Macky Sall extradited to Senegal to stand trial. According to him, the former president should be held accountable for “political and economic crimes.” “Against the impunity of Macky Sall’s political and economic crimes, an international arrest warrant should be issued by the new authorities to initiate the extradition procedure to Senegal. This will be a great service to the Senegalese people!!!” he affirmed.

Boubacar Séye himself was a victim of the former regime, having been arrested and imprisoned. In fact, in January 2021, he was apprehended at the Blaise Diagne International Airport in Diass (AIBD) upon his arrival and charged with “spreading false news,” and was then placed in pre-trial detention at the Cap Manuel prison in Dakar. He was released ten days later, stating afterward that he had developed diabetes during his detention, a condition to which he was not predisposed.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that just before leaving office, Macky Sall attempted to postpone the presidential election and took advantage of the confusion to introduce a bill in the National Assembly requesting that an amnesty law be passed to erase all crimes and offenses related to political demonstrations that took place between 2021 and February 2024.
