Ali Bongo, ousted from power by a military coup in August 2023, now sees his status as president of the Democratic Party of Gabon (PDG) being revoked. This decision was communicated yesterday, Thursday, March 7, 2024, according to an official statement from the party.

A delegation went to the former head of state’s private residence to officially inform him of his removal from the party presidency. The PDG cites the “multifaceted incapacity” of the son of Omar Bongo as justification for this action. It is a double blow for this politician, who in a few months was stripped of his title as president of the Republic of Gabon and that of president of the party founded by his father 55 years ago.

The party leadership is now entrusted to Paul Biyogbé Mba, as the first vice president. He implies that the PDG had to choose the lesser of two evils. The absence of Ali Bongo has “consequences on the real functioning of the party… The general interest must prevail,” he added.
