Just two days before the conclusion of the electoral campaign, political excitement reaches its peak in Senegal in anticipation of the presidential election on Sunday, March 24, 2024. Special circumstances have led to a postponement of the originally scheduled date for the presidential election, which was set for February 25, thus shortening the campaign period. Despite this time constraint, candidates are actively touring the country to rally voters to their cause.
Senegal, due to its geography, facilitates encounters between candidates, as illustrated recently by the exchange between Anta Babacar Ngom and Serigne Mboup, both aspiring for the presidency and recognized as significant entrepreneurs in the country. Anta Babacar Ngom, director of Sedima and responsible for introducing the multinational KFC to Senegal, crosses paths with Serigne Mboup, founder and owner of CCBM, an influential company in the household appliance sector.
Their meeting in Saint-Louis was an opportunity for an exchange praising each other’s journey and emphasizing the importance of entrepreneurship. Anta Babacar Ngom, a graduate of prestigious national and international business schools, and Serigne Mboup, a self-taught individual trained in “Daara” – traditional schools focused on Quranic teaching – represent successful models from divergent paths.
During this meeting, they both called on the Senegalese people to carefully consider the profiles of the candidates. Following Serigne Mboup’s intervention, Anta Babacar Ngom advocated for increased respect for entrepreneurship, addressing criticisms that have sometimes reduced them to simplistic stereotypes, such as “chicken seller candidates” and “Daara candidates.” She highlighted the significant impact their work has on the lives of Senegalese people, defending the value of their contribution to the country’s economic and social development.
