Politics has divided many families in Burkina, laments Pr Michel Akotionga
Pô, March 30, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – Renowned gynecologist Pr Michel Akotionga believes that the way politics is conducted in Burkina Faso has divided many families, which has led him to distance himself from it in order to focus on women’s healthcare and the fight against female genital mutilation (FGM).
The National Radio and Television of Burkina Faso honored Professor Michel Akotionga, a specialist in gynecology/teacher-researcher and a key player in the fight against FGM, on Friday, March 29, 2024, in Sector No. 5 of Pô in the Nahouri province.
An Africa Links 24 journalist attended the recording of the program and was able to gather some statements from the esteemed gynecologist.
“I became a gynecologist to pay homage to my mother and all women because my mother gave me everything, and unfortunately, she did not get to enjoy me as she passed away when I was young. Every time I see a woman during my work, I think of my mother. That is what led me to defend their cause, especially against female genital mutilation (FGM). I am optimistic that one day we will no longer hear about FGM in Burkina Faso,” said Pr Akotionga in an interview with RTB Radio.
“I applaud the government’s decision to reduce fees for certain exams, as it will allow the less fortunate to benefit from them,” the professor remarked regarding the significant reduction in fees for MRIs, CT scans, and dialysis treatments.
Regarding the Transition government’s actions, Pr Akotionga believes that strong measures are being taken and that it is up to the people to support these actions.
The establishment of the 15th as a day for traditions, the professor sees as a positive development. It will allow individuals to reconnect with their roots, although it will need proper guidance.
When asked why he did not enter the field of politics, the professor stated that he is very social, and the two do not mix well. “Politicians in Africa, especially in Burkina Faso, view their political opponents as enemies to be eliminated. This has divided many families today,” noted Pr Michel Akotionga on the impact of political behavior on social cohesion.
Regarding internally displaced persons (IDPs), the professor finds the situation deplorable. He emphasized the need for proper awareness efforts towards IDPs, as many of them may not want to return home after the crisis.
On the issue of land, Pr Michel Akotionga believes it is a significant problem that, if not resolved, could lead to the division of villages and even entire families since it has become the easiest way to make money, according to the teacher.
In the fight against terrorism, the professor commended the commitment of the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, and expressed gratitude to the combat forces for their efforts and sacrifices on the ground.
As for expectations, Professor Michel Akotionga expressed a desire for a water reservoir to be built in the municipality of Pô. Given the province’s numerous cultural, architectural, and tourist potentials, he hopes to see the province equipped with a cultural center to facilitate youth training.
In conclusion, the professor encouraged the younger generation not to rely solely on others, not to get discouraged, to preserve and take risks in order to build their lives.
During the program, testimonials from relatives, friends, acquaintances, and comrades were shared, all recognizing him as a deeply humane, available, humble man with African values and an approachable demeanor. Additionally, his family, friends, and neighbors from Pô came to support him during the program. Burkina Faso Information Agency Hamidou K. OUENA.
