The Pacific Fleet frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov from Russia arrived in Massawa today, initiating a five-day port-call to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Eritrea. The welcoming ceremony, attended by the Eritrean Navy, Coast Guard, the Russian Ambassador to Eritrea, Igor Mozgo, and high-ranking Eritrean Defense officials, marked the arrival of the Russian naval ship. Russian authorities confirmed earlier that a group of Pacific Fleet warships had navigated the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and entered the Red Sea, including the Varyag missile cruiser and the Marshal Shaposhnikov frigate.
In March, these Russian warships participated in the Sea Security Belt-2024 joint international naval exercise with Iranian and Chinese naval vessels. This week, the Pacific Fleet ships engaged in anti-piracy operations and practiced destroying unmanned boats in the Gulf of Aden within the Arabian Sea. It is reminiscent of India’s First Training Squadron ship’s inaugural port-call at Massawa port in April 2022 as part of its overseas deployment.
The arrival of the Marshal Shaposhnikov frigate in Massawa is a symbolic gesture to honor the enduring diplomatic ties between Russia and Eritrea. The welcoming ceremony, led by Eritrea’s Navy, was attended by various government officials, including high-ranking military commanders and the Russian Ambassador. The tour of the frigate provided an opportunity for Eritrean officials to learn about the ship’s objectives and history.
It is noteworthy that India’s naval ship also conducted a similar tour to Massawa. Social media posts and news articles highlighted the significance of the Marshal Shaposhnikov frigate’s visit, emphasizing the historic milestone of 30 years of diplomatic relations between Russia and Eritrea. The interaction between the Eritrean and Russian naval counterparts during these port-calls strengthens bilateral relations and promotes mutual understanding.
Overall, the arrival of the Marshal Shaposhnikov frigate in Massawa signifies a momentous occasion in commemorating the diplomatic relations between Russia and Eritrea. These port-calls serve as a reminder of the longstanding partnership between the two nations and the shared commitment to maritime security. The presence of international naval vessels in Eritrean waters also highlights the importance of cooperation and collaboration in ensuring peace and stability in the region.
