Rukungiri District delegates who are loyal to the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Katonga Road faction have unanimously agreed to a proposal put forth by their leaders to form a new political party, according to authorities. This decision came following a conference held in Rukungiri’s western division that brought together attendees from all parishes, sub-counties, and three counties within the district.
The Katonga faction, which was established as a breakaway from the Najjanankumbi establishment, is led by former party president Dr. Kizza Besigye and Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago. The Najjanankumbi group, on the other hand, is led by FDC president Patrick Amuriat Obboi and party Secretary General Nathan Nandala Mafabi.
Rukungiri District FDC chairperson Aloysius Mugarura expressed their stance by stating, “We can’t reconcile with the Najjanankumbi team because by doing so we will have betrayed our Son Dr. Kizza Besigye. So, I want to tell you that if we want to unseat Mr. Museveni and his NRM government, a new political party is the answer.” He went on to emphasize that a new party signifies new hope for Uganda and rebuilding their commitment to serving the people.
Former Rukungiri Municipality lawmaker Roland Mugume Kaginda echoed this sentiment by declaring their intent to follow Dr. Besigye, whom he referred to as the “son of the soil.” He criticized the Najjanankumbi faction by likening it to being infested with bean weevils.
However, former Rukungiri District woman Member of Parliament Betty Muzanira highlighted the need for further consultations in various regions before arriving at a final decision. Rukungiri FDC Secretary General Chistopher Nabimanya supported the move towards forming a new party, citing the belief that the current FDC at Najjanankumbi had been compromised and handed over to Museveni.
Nabimanya emphasized the necessity of recapturing their party from those who had allegedly sold it out, stating, “Our party was given to Museveni by poor thinkers and because we realized that we need to recapture our party from them…we decided to form a new one which will be named in the near future.”
The delegates from Rukungiri District have shown solidarity in their decision to establish a new political party, signaling a shift away from the existing FDC at Najjanankumbi. This move signifies their determination to assert their independence and recommit to their goal of bringing about change in Uganda’s political landscape. As they embark on this new journey, they are hopeful that this new party will lead them to the “Promised Land” and serve as a beacon of hope for the people of Uganda.
